James L. Boyd III is an accomplished dance artist, choreographer, pedagogue, performer, director, and executive whose career reflects a distinctive integration of artistry, education, leadership, and innovation. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Boyd has continued to expand the possibilities of dance through his mastery of multiple dance methods, professional styles, and performance disciplines.
A graduate of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Mr. Boyd earned his B.F.A. in Dance and Choreography from SUNY Purchase College and later obtained his M.F.A. from Jacksonville University. His artistic foundation has been shaped by some of the most influential choreographers and dance makers in history. During his professional career, he has performed works by dance giants including Merce Cunningham, Bill T. Jones, George Balanchine, and Paul Taylor.
Since graduation, Mr. Boyd has extended his performance career beyond the concert dance stage, sharing stages with internationally recognized recording artists including Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, and Bruce Springsteen. As a principal artist with the internationally recognized technical dance companies Bad Boys of Dance and Bad Boys of Ballet, he performed throughout the world and alongside celebrated dancers including Misty Copeland, Joseph Gatti, Isaac Hernández, Eric Underwood, and Rasta Thomas.
Mr. Boyd's versatility has also brought him to television. He made guest appearances with Bad Boys of Dance on the hit television program So You Think You Can Dance and appeared twice as a semi-finalist on the competitive television series America's Got Talent, further demonstrating his ability to connect technical dance excellence with broad public audiences.
As an educator, Mr. Boyd has dedicated more than a decade to teaching within higher education. His pedagogical career includes Troy University, Jacksonville University, and Alabama State University, where he has contributed to the development of emerging artists through dance education, mentorship, movement training, choreography, and interdisciplinary learning.
Today, James L. Boyd III continues to evolve as one of the dance industry's respected leaders, extending his work beyond traditional performance and education.
